The Iowa Independent: CNN/YouTube Democratic Debate Liveblog

Comfortably planted on the couch And so it begins...Anderson Cooper's introduction is interesting. This does sound like it will be an unpredictable evening.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
T.M. So much for the CNN and YouTube technology. Trying to participate via live CNN streamline, but there seems to be some technological glitches on CNN's end. Like the YouTube generation, I cannot afford cable and have become dependent on the Internet. This is the first live stream that has been disruptive. Oh the irony of it all.

Questions are a little touchy-feely Maybe I'm too much of a hack, but so far the questions have been a little too "touchy-feely."  They're all meant to illustrate youthful angst, not to deeply probe candidates' policy positions.

Gravel attack on Obama falls flat. Trying to stretch bundlers into lobbyists.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Any Liberals Out There? Hillary handled the liberal question well, but will Democratic primary voters--many who DO consider themselves liberals--be pleased with her response?

And boy, do I wish Cooper had asked all the candidates to raise their hands on whether they considered themselves liberals.

Edwards has predominantly displayed a yellow Livestrong bracelet. A nice touch, given Edwards has announced he'll be riding with Lance Armstrong during Ragbrai in Iowa.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Kucinich does a nice job on the race reparation question by taking out the race and making it a class issue...
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
CNN has worked out its streamline issues, for now anyhow.

Obama black enough The cab comment was perfect.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Race and Gender... Could they have asked a better question than a are you black or woman enough. I thought his scenario had already played itself out with the early caucus start. Obama's cab hailing comment in Manhattan was a nice touch. Good initial response on behalf of Hillary as well. "I can't run as anything but a woman," was an effective response to help minimze this form of questioning.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Edwards did a great job of sticking up for Obama and Clinton. Nice touch.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Who's a better advocate for women? What kind of question is this. C'mon CNN/YouTube, out of 600 video entries, you had to have better questions than this.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Edwards on gay marriage question Edwards gives a confusing answer on the gay marriage question. I don't think he did himself any favors there.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Edwards' bracelet He's had it at all the debates. I believe it was at the last one where he moved it in front of his watch so it could be better seen.
  • KN · 2 years ago
Re marriage v. civil unions What's in a name? Everything. Language matters. "Separate but equal" is inherently unequal. I wish more candidates were courageous on this issue.
  • noneed4thneed · 2 years ago
Great video by Edwards I love the videos from Dodd and Edwards.  I want to see those on TV!
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Personally, I believe if we're to hold true to the Constitution and separation of state and church, a federal bill should be passed legalizing civil unions for all, thus guaranteeing all rights offered to both straight and gay couples. Then if couples want to get married or want their union to be recognized as such by thier church, then it's up to their church/denomination to recongize the marriage. Marriage and civil unions have been used synomonously when they have different meanings.

    In short:

State recognizes Civil Union (and all the beneifts tied to this)

Church recognizes Marriage (and all the benefits tied to this)

    Darfur Question

Richardson: bring the nations together to fight the problem.

That's kinda hard to do when no one really likes and trusts us anymore.

  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
We're finally seeing the Richardson that I've seen on the campaign trail. He's standing stronger, speaking more eloquently.

Darfur Question Biden: Kids will be dead by the time diplomacy is over.

Excellent answer from Biden. Shows his personal outrage at the situation.

Gravel: We have responsibilities to a sense of global government.

You know, he hits the nail on the head. They don't trust us.

Clinton: We need to stop talking and start acting.

Won't commit to American troops on the ground... hmmm... Wow, is she taking this 'tough' stuff over the edge?
  • KN · 2 years ago
Darfur Hillary is exactly right on this issue.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
I agree Until tonight, he hasn't done himself many favors.

Although -- why didn't he clap during the mini-tribute?
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Is this a debate/ forum or a goodwill effort/advertisement fro CNN. Not quite sure why CNN interrupted the Q and A here...

Biden on Darfur Biden wins on Darfur question.

This Iraq pull-out question is interesting

Obama qualified his answer by saying "combat" troops.

Biden also qualified with "combat" troops -- but did explain it (that pulling out 'combat' troops isn't a complete troop pull-out.

  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Do you think this is why Edwards and Clinton want the others out? Kucinich just spanked them both -- and the Democratic leadership in Congress -- with his Iraq answer.

You know, that little tete-a-tete between he and Clinton was made even more crappy when you consider what Kucinich did for him in Iowa in 2004.

  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Hillary may be a little late on asking the question about the war in Iraq and that the Republicans aren't providing the support and/or answers. The anti-war folks are going to be asking: Why didn't you ask these questions/demand answers in 2002.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
I like the question -- I don't get very many of them. LOL @ Gravel -- I like it when they play off their own flaws and challenges with humor.

"There's only one thing worse than a soldier dying in vain: It's more soldiers dying in vain."

  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
So is Gravel saying soldier died for Baskin Robbins?
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Looks like Obama called Hillary out on my anti-war question and asking the tough questions in 2002.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Obama scores Major uppercut to Hillary, directly on her early support of the war. The time for us to ask how we were going to get out of Iraq was before we went in.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Women and the Selective Service Dodd -- yes. Don't just ask one gender. He now pushes his national service campaign. I think that's one of his strongest areas.

Clinton -- yes. Like Dodd, does not want a draft -- which leads me to ask both of them why we don't just kill off Selective Service?

Obama -- Yes, but not combat and does not want the draft

Edwards -- Doesn't answer the question, but says he believes women can serve honorably

    Gravel -- Yes

  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Yup That was a feather in his cap. Interesting to watch those top three go after each other. I believe it has gone past the point of just "highlighting their differences."
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Wow, nice set up for Edwards with Tallie AF vet in crowd with wife Elizabeth. It lloked like he knew this question was coming and was so excited he got to play his card, that he had a little trouble with the oratory exclamation point.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Good repsone by Obama about not talking to countries as a form as punishment is absurd. This undermines the notion of diplomacy.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Hillary diplomacy Hillary won't promise to meet with the bad guys in the first year. Apparently she needs to appear tough.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Powerful question Very powerful question from the veteran who had lost so many loved ones and doesn't want to lose more.

Good answer from Dodd -- I didn't realize he came from such a heavily military family.

Did Biden just refer to Richardson as a senator or was he cutting back to Dodd's comments?

Text PEACE Dennis says send a message -- text PEACE
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Hillary keeps trying to blame everything on Bush administration Notice how she always goes back to Bush and the Pentagon about Iraq. I think people are ready to move beyond that. She's missing some opportunities, we are expecting more from the Democrats in Congress than saying it's the Republicans' fault.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Biden clarifies his reason for voting for the military funding bill regarding the MRAP vehicles, which have gone into mass production. This has appealed to a number of young Iraq veterans, who think in real time, meaning what can be done to protect them in the next 5 minutes verses the political time in D.C.

What a fluff question Really - this question is bunk. We have declining public schools; NCLB is up for reauthorization; and higher education costs are spiraling out of control and the best America can do  is "who was your favorite teacher?"

At least Edwards got to plug the mill, eh?

  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Oh boy, the first question yet about education.

    Nice softball question.

When are we going to get to the meaty education issues that have been ignored thus far in the caucus debates.

  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Edwards He manages to mention his dad worked in a mill.
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
NCLB Richardson: Will the $40,000 minimum wage be adjusted for cost-of living?
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
NCLB is so important for me personally My oldest daughter was in gifted and talented programs before NCLB... now the school district doesn't offer them. They are way too busy teaching the tests.

My youngest son who has a learning disability is also being short-changed. Because the school must focus so intently on the test, he cannot move forward with his IEP and tackle the things he needs to focus on most.

  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
oh boy... Next question: "Have you had 'the talk' with your children?"

If my eyes roll much more, I might screw up the earth's tilt.

  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Obama shifts to the problems of inequality in the funding of public school systems. This has been a major issue for a long time as Jonathan Kozol points out in "Savage Inequalities." The public-funding of schools has been dsicriminatory for decades and I'm amazed the ACLU hasn't challenged this systematically, state by state, and district by district.

I'm afraid of the answer, something to do with upper-class protectionism?

  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
What the heck?! Was that Mr. Hankey?
  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Mr. Bill is alive and well and impersonating Frosty the Snowman to push his global warming agenda.

Who's the greenest candidate of them all? What's up with this line of questioningand who is this moderator. I don't have cable...

  • Anonymous · 2 years ago
Verified Voting Question Glad to hear this question -- it's an issue which has pretty much been treated as Macaca on the campaign trail.

Too bad only Richardson had opportunity to answer.
